Margaret Delmonico, retired director of public relations at PSECU in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, has been named Credit Union Magazine’s 2020 Credit Union Hero of the Year. A publication of the Credit Union National Association, the magazine annually honors an individual – selected by a national vote – who demonstrates a commitment to the longstanding “people helping people” credit union philosophy. This marks the 13th year for the award.

“To be presented with this award is such an honor, and I am incredibly humbled to be recognized for doing the work that I loved to do,” Delmonico said. “I consider myself fortunate to have been able to dedicate the past 40 years to helping PSECU’s members and the greater Pennsylvania community. I’ve always believed that we’re put here for a purpose, and that we should try to leave things better than when we found them. I’m thankful because through the credit union movement, I truly feel I’ve been able to do that.”

The writeup in the magazine cited Delmonico’s achievements, including launching a speakers bureau, which performed outreach in the community and “showed people the faces behind the phone voice” at PSECU.

Delmonico also started WalletWorks, which has provided financial education for more than 50,000 people. And the scholarship program she developed has awarded more than $500,000 to 135 students. Delmonico was also cited for creating a corporate social responsibility platform that emphasizes contributing to the greater good of the community.

The cooperative principle that resonates most with Delmonico is concern for the community. She sees that play out in the credit union’s day-to-day operations, its financial education program, and its outreach. “Sometimes we are so much in the day-to-day of what we do that we don’t understand it’s not about the money itself, but what that money allows us to accomplish in life,” Delmonico says.

Opened in 1934, PSECU was founded by 22 people who pooled $90. Today, PSECU manages more than $6 billion in assets and has over 450,000 members. PSECU was named a 2019 Best-In-State Credit Union by Forbes Magazine and a Best Credit Union of 2020 by GOBankingRates.
